At just 20, Tinotenda Mada is already reshaping the world of cybersecurity. From her childhood excitement with computers in primary school to her current pursuit of a degree in Cybersecurity and Forensic Auditing, her journey is nothing short of extraordinary. But what truly sets her apart is her transformative experience at the Women Techsters Bootcamp. She is pushing beyond her limits and isn’t stopping anytime soon. Read on to discover some secret weapons on how to conquer the tech world.
My name is Tinotenda Mada, a 20-year-old lady currently pursuing my bachelor’s degree in Cybersecurity and Forensic Auditing at the University of Zimbabwe. My passion for computer systems began at a very young age. From primary school, I found myself deeply interested in working with computers, a fascination that continued through High school where I studied Computer Science, Mathematics, and Business Studies.
My decision to venture into cybersecurity was motivated by a desire to make the Digital world safer for everyone. In today’s world, the volume and sophistication of Cyber Attacks are constantly increasing, and as our reliance on technology grows, so does our vulnerability. I want to protect different computer systems from these vulnerabilities and cyberattacks, ensuring people can use technology without fear.
Initially, I discovered the Women Techsters Bootcamp through a WhatsApp group for women developers where a member shared the flyer. I was hesitant to register at first because I was worried about balancing school work with the Bootcamp program. However, I followed Tech4Dev on Instagram to stay updated on future opportunities, and over time the success stories and positive comments motivated me to apply. Once I was accepted, I realized it was one of the best decisions I had ever made because the Bootcamp was an eye-opening experience that provided me with valuable knowledge and skills.
The training was insightful, especially in terms of being enlightened about the different career paths I can pursue in cybersecurity. Also, interacting with women from various countries helped me appreciate cultural differences and learn how to collaborate effectively despite not knowing each other for long. Although I faced network challenges, our facilitator was patient and provided recordings of each lesson. This allowed me to catch up when my connection stabilized.
The Bootcamp taught me the importance of time management because balancing my schedule was difficult initially, but I had to create a timetable to manage my activities effectively. I also learned how to make good presentations and gained confidence through group discussions. These skills are essential for presenting ideas and projects to business partners and clients in the future which is a win for me.
The Bootcamp highlighted the daily vulnerabilities we face and their impact on our lives and the economy. By educating others on protecting their devices and systems, we can improve livelihoods and safeguard the economy from cyberattacks. The Women Techster initiative program is an excellent opportunity to learn more about the tech industry. The training was transformative, allowing me to explore various career paths within cybersecurity and get hands-on experience with platforms like NMAP, Wireshark, and TryHackMe.com. Before this Bootcamp, I wasn’t familiar with these tools, and now I have a deeper understanding of their applications, thanks to Tech4Dev.
Moving forward, I aim to advance the skills I acquired from the bootcamp and obtain more skills through future certifications. There is always more to learn and apply in the technology industry. I plan to remain hardworking, determined, and dedicated to everything the industry has to offer. The bootcamp has provided me with clarity on what I want to achieve in my career. With the skills I have gained, I hope to secure a job in the technology industry and eventually develop my own systems.
Starting the journey is often the hardest part. Many fear the unknown, but I encourage every woman to give the technology industry a shot. You never know what possibilities await you. Don’t give up before you’ve even started.
I am immensely grateful for the opportunity to join the Women Techsters Bootcamp Cohort 3.3 and will continue to encourage other hesitant women to sign up for the next bootcamp cohort. Thank you, Tech4Dev, for empowering women in Africa with such an incredible opportunity.
