The year is 2023, and despite the alarming layoff rate in the Tech industry, the Tech industry is still booming thanks to Artificial Intelligence and the increasing demand for the ease that technology brings in this ever-evolving global village.

If part of your resolution this year is to break through in the Tech sector and have some share of Tech money, then this article is for you. We have compiled a list of things you need to know to get started.

  1. Do adequate research:

One common mistake people make is forgetting that Tech is just like any other business venture. It is essential to do your research first. What career path suits you? What certifications do you need? Where can you get proper training? What is the pay across various career paths?

There are so many things to consider before starting a career in Tech. Adequate research would open your eyes to the countless opportunities available in the tech field and how to navigate them. It would also enlighten you on using the available resources you come across as you embark on this journey.

2. Choose a tech career and build on it:

You can always start from the known to the unknown, which is why you must research the available roles in the tech field. This way, you are more likely to find the tech role that suits your personality more and aligns with your strengths and previous expertise. As crazy as it sounds, there is at least a tech role that aligns with your strengths and personal interests.

For example, for marketing-savvy individuals looking for employment in the tech industry, careers in social media management for tech companies are the ideal choice.

If you are “a born-leader” with excellent communication skills and a smart thinker who works well with other team members, you might want to consider the field of Product management.

Whatever skills or personality traits you have is always a great pointer on the tech path to thread.

3. Gather Information:

When you find the career path that suits you, the next thing to do is not to start applying for roles. Not what you were expecting? Hold on, let’s explain. The next thing to do is to gather information. The internet is an information hub. Explore it. There is an endless supply of resources on the internet, like e-books, articles, videos, and podcasts, that can help you find your feet.

4. Develop a solid foundation of skills:

You can start developing your skills from the information you have gathered. It is crucial to consider the importance of technical and soft skills when transitioning into tech because you need to have a strong foundation of skills to thrive in the tech industry.

Although the skills you need to thrive would differ depending on the tech role, good communication skills, creativity, the ability to work well with others, and critical thinking, amongst others, are a must-have.

5. Be passionate about learning:

There is a famous quote by John Heywood, an English playwright, saying, “Rome Was not Built in a Day, But They Were Laying Bricks Every Hour.” This explains that great things take time and consistency, so if your primary reason for wanting to transition into tech is the money, you might need to slow that down a bit.

Tech is an ever-evolving field, so if you want to stay relevant, you must keep learning daily and advancing yourself.

6. Enroll in a training program:

There are many Bootcamp programs you can apply to, learn with them, and get certified. These trainings will help you find a perfect footing in the tech industry and give you great insights on navigating the field.
