My name is Adenike Awotunde, and I am a resident of Oyo state, Nigeria. I was born and raised in Lagos but currently reside in Ogbomoso, Oyo State. I have an educational background in Microbiology from Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso, Oyo State, and I obtained my Master’s degree in the same field from the prestigious University of Ibadan, Oyo state, Nigeria. I have 7 years of experience working in the banking industry.

Being stuck in an 8 am-5 pm job for almost 7 years of my life created a void and instilled a desire within me to explore opportunities in the digital and technology space. Firstly, for personal growth, as I realized that staying relevant in my chosen career would be nearly impossible without acquiring the necessary technology skills. Additionally, I was passionate about aligning my educational background and skill set with my work experience, which led me to transition into the field of data tech.

I made the transition into tech with the vision of becoming a well-rounded woman — someone who is successful in her career and also excels in her domestic roles, such as building a home, impacting younger generations, and contributing to the nation at large. Having tech skills would provide automation and flexibility in my work, allowing me to devote time to other responsibilities as a wife and mother.

During my search for what to do next after resigning from my role in the bank, I came across Tech4Dev on social media. I applied for the Women Techsters Bootcamp cohort 2.6, and I was selected for the Data Analysis learning track. I graduated in June 2023 and subsequently applied for the Women Techsters Fellowship class of 2024, which I am currently participating in. Through the Women Techsters initiative of Tech4Dev, I have successfully transitioned into Data Science and acquired skills that I can now merge with my educational background.

The Women Techsters Bootcamp served as my introduction to the tech industry, unveiling various opportunities within the field. The journey has been incredible, although not without its challenges. However, I view challenges as stepping stones to growth and progress.

One of the challenges I encountered during the training was time management, as I needed to dedicate a substantial amount of time to learning. I also faced difficulties with consistent access to power supply and stable internet connectivity.

Overcoming these challenges involved proper planning, setting priorities right, seeking help, and discussing my needs with others.

Throughout the training, I familiarized myself with Microsoft Excel, Power BI, SQL, Python, Tableau, and more. My Bootcamp facilitator, Samuel Iheagwam, delivered classes excellently, alleviating my fear of being a novice in this field.

Once I complete the Fellowship in a few months’ time, my goal is to contribute to health-related research using machine learning and AI. Additionally, I hope to inspire and assist other women and young girls who are willing to transition into tech by sharing my story and connecting them with the right resources.

Currently, I am utilising the knowledge and skills gained through the Women Techsters program in my role as a Clinical Data Specialist at Clinfocus.
