Curious about how a single opportunity can change the course of a career? Dive into Ngozi’s inspiring story of self-discovery, empowerment, and tech success!
My name is Ngozi Nkume, a product designer with a deep passion for innovation and creativity. My journey began at the University of Abuja, where curiosity fueled my drive to explore new ideas. I’ve always been motivated to make a meaningful impact in everything I do, whether it’s through my work as a designer or my personal growth as a human being. I aspire to constantly evolve, and I truly hope to channel my skills and experiences into projects that inspire and empower others. Ultimately, my goal is to leave a positive mark on the world and encourage others to do the same.
I first came across Tech4Dev on a friend’s WhatsApp status about a year ago, but at the time, I was dealing with some personal challenges and didn’t give it much attention. Later, I saw it again on Twitter, and by then, I had already started teaching myself product design through YouTube tutorials. However, I found myself stuck, unsure of the next steps in my journey. That’s when I decided to apply for Women Techster Bootcamp, hoping for guidance, direction, and the opportunity to collaborate with like-minded individuals.
At the start of the program, I was a bit reserved, often typing out my questions instead of speaking up, but thanks to the patience of our facilitator, Mr. Mohammed, who always took the time to address every query, I gradually became more confident, learning alongside other women was an incredible experience, free from bias or prejudice, and it felt like being part of a supportive community.
Throughout the training, I learned how to properly execute product design tasks, starting with user research, and how to solve problems through innovative approaches. I also gained hands-on experience with Microsoft tools like Excel, PowerPoint, and Microsoft Teams, which I had never used before. Working with others to complete tasks under time constraints gave me a glimpse of what the real-world workspace is like.
With these new skills, I’m confident they will not only make me more independent but also boost my employability and ensure financial stability. Now, I’m ready to start applying for jobs and internships, as this program has given me a clearer sense of direction in my career.
To anyone on a similar path, my advice is to seize any opportunity that aligns with your vision and surround yourself with like-minded individuals who share your passion and goals.
